Overcoming The World (1 John 5:1-5)

I”m back, and ready to dig into whatever God has for us in this passage.

Feel free to read through it as I share my thoughts.

[1] Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. [2] By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. [3] For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. [4] For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. [5] Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? (1 John 5:1-5 ESV)

(1) Everyone who believes in God is born of God

What exactly is this supposed to mean? Good question! gotquestions.org offers an exceptional explanation to this question, go check it out!

(2&3) Obeying God is part of loving God

As we have read many times throughout the book of first John, we cannot truly love God without being obedient to His commandments found in His word. Even so, we can stand to be reminded again.

Just like when we say we love others, we will be willing to cooperate with them and help them out as much as we can. Love for God is the same, though we say we love God, do our actions really prove our love?

Next time you read a command from God’s word, I challenge you to remember that command and seek to be obedient to it throughout your life.

(4&5) Those who believe have overcome the World

Those who believe that Jesus Christ is God, have overcome the world, that’s a pretty big deal. In case you didn’t know the world is an evil place, not to mention how easily it is to be deceived by the devil’s schemes. It’s no news, the world is not going to last forever.

The reason why overcoming the world is such a huge deal is because the world has no hope. That means those who have overcome the World, have hope. Those who are born of God, can be confident knowing that they’ll spend eternity with Christ.

Let’s be sure we don’t let our guard down, becoming susceptible to the world’s evil ways. Here’s three super basic and practical ways to keep your focus on Christ and grow in His likeness everyday, you probably already know these, but who couldn’t use a reminder?

  • Pray Consistently, not only when you need help.
  • Read God’s word everyday, and seek to obey it.
  • Give God the glory in everything you do.

Have a good week, and thanks for reading!

  1. So simple just love God by spending time with Him in prayer and reading His Word and then doing what He wants you to do. Now if only we would consistently do that. Keep up the good study.

  2. I like your there points to stay focused on Christ. If a person can at least keep these three priorities on a daily basis, faith is sure to grow stronger and a relationship with Jesus all the more intimate.

    Blessings to you!

  3. Yes, the most encouraging aspect of John’s 1st Epistle is that we can love in an unworldly spiritual sense because God has given His love. We live in a world of hate on the one hand and counterfeit sensual love on the other. In such a corrupt age we can be as shining lights because of the love given to us when we were born again. This the anointing given to us. Let us pray that this holy seed will be cultivated and grow until that day when we shall be like Christ and see Him face to face. Amen.

  4. “The reason why overcoming the world is such a huge deal is because the world has no hope. That means those who have overcome the World, have hope.” You can’t say it any clearer than that! As Christians we have hope but it is not here. It is “over in the Glory Land” as the old hymnal says. One of the issues many Christians today are tempted with is the idea that this life should be our hope.
