This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.~1 John 1:5-10 (ESV)
I’m sure that while you were reading these verses you probably noticed two words were highlighted and mentioned many times throughout the passage. These two words are the entire theme of this passage, light and darkness.
Before I can write more about the meaning or idea of this passage, you need to understand exactly what the meaning of those words are.
If light signifies goodness and righteousness, then darkness is obvious, meaning evil.
God Is Light
When it says that God is light, I think it’s emphasizing more than one thing.
First, God is perfect. I think this is the main meaning, and the most important part. It means that God is perfect and He is without sin or mistake.
Second I think we should also know. That because God is perfect, we can trust Him and know that He knows what’s best for our lives. That trust should make us want to serve Him with all our life and choose to follow His guidance and direction for us.
What Does it Mean For Us to Walk in The Light?
You probably all know the basic meaning of walking in the light. But what kind of impact should this have on our lives? Recently I read this quote by John Piper: “The fruit proves the truth of the root.” This is what our lives should reflect. The root is our belief and the fruit is our works because of our belief. As Christians, we are to be walking in the light and if we are, we will see fruit. Everyone should see Christ active and working through us. It doesn’t mean we’ll always be perfect. But we can know that when we do make mistakes God will forgive us if we confess. But it also means we should be praying and working to discontinue any habit of sin we have in our lives.
We Have Fellowship With God
If we’re walking in the light and living a life that is honorable to God, we will have fellowship with God. We can have fellowship with Him through prayer, meaning that whenever we have something burdening us or anytime we simply want to talk to God, we can talk to Him and we can have fellowship with Him through prayer.
God’s Son Cleanses Us From All Sin
As Christians we understand what Christ did on the cross for our sins. We know that He took the punishment for all our sins, that He washed us clean and made it possible for us to spend eternity in heaven one day with Him.
We All Sin
In this passage we also see that it says we are all sinners. It says that if we say we don’t sin then we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. Which means that if we think we don’t sin, we are basically saying that what God calls sin really isn’t sin and what we are doing isn’t wrong even if God’s word says it is.
The New Living translation says:
“If we claim we have not sinned, we are calling God a liar and showing that his word has no place in our hearts.’ (NLT)
This version of the passage emphasizes that if we claim we don’t sin, we are showing God’s word has no place in our heart. More specifically we should understand that if we don’t believe one part of scripture then we don’t believe the rest of scripture. Because each part of God’s word ties together, every little piece works together to help us understand the entire meaning.
What Effect Should This Have On Our Lives?
If we are Christians we should see some changes in our life and we should see the effect of Christ working in us. I like the parable in the new testament about the man that finds great treasure in a field, he then hides it and goes home. He sells all that he has so that he can buy the field. This is a perfect example of what our lives should be like.
We can know that by giving up all that we have on this earth, we are not losing anything. In fact, we are gaining so much more through Christ, only if we are willing to give it all and follow Him.
