Once again, Christmas is quickly approaching. Many people celebrate Christmas, but it is extra special for those who have faith in God and have been saved from their sins.
Christmas is a time of celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ. We celebrate because of the reason Christ was born to earth. He came not to serve Himself, but to save us from our bondage to sin by living a sinless life and dying on a cross. It certainly is easy for us to be distracted by all the celebrations and gift giving, so much so that we forget the true reason for all the celebrations.
I want to share in this post three practical ideas for you to grow closer to God during this Christmas season.
#1: Be In The Word
Like I mentioned earlier, it can be easy for us to get distracted by all the things going on during this season. That makes it easy for us to neglect reading the Bible.
I know many people read advent plans during Christmas time and find that a good thing for them to do. There are many Christmas topical Bible reading plans for you to try, though it is probably too late to begin a traditional twenty-five day plan, there are still many other shorter plans to try. I would suggest finding a plan like that to follow or simply opening the Bible each day and reading.
#2: Consider Giving to a Charity Organization or Volunteer at a Local Charity Project or Organization That Will Benefit The People in Your Community
Donating to a charity organization or helping out somewhere to serve the people in your community, would be a great way to grow closer to God during this season.
We are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10 ESV)
I think of this verse from Ephesians as a call for Christians to serve other people, when we serve others we serve Christ. Because we are His workmanship. When we help others, we are sharing the love of Christ to those that we serve.
#3: Memorize Some Bible Passages
Memorizing some bible verses or passages on Christ’s birth would certainly be a great way to draw yourself closer to God this Christmas season. If you are interested I have listed a few passages below for you to consider.
- Isaiah 9:6
- Philippians 2:8-10
- Luke 1:30-31
- 2 Corinthians 9:15
- James 1:17
- Luke 2:14
I hope you find those ideas helpful and I encourage you to try one or a couple of these things this Christmas.
I will be taking a short break from posting next week, but, Lord willing I hope to share again with you on the 28th.
I hope you have an enjoyable time this Christmas season celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ!
P.S. Do you have any suggestions for a bible study? Feel free to comment and share your ideas either for a topic or book of the bible.
